Worried about your upcoming finals? Looking for some extra practice questions to help you ace those finals? The Undergraduate Chemistry Society (UCS) is here to help is selling final exam packages for CHEM 123, CHEM 213 and CHEM 218!

Prices:

• CHEM 123 → $10 each ($8 for UCS members) SOLD OUT.
• CHEM 213 → $10 each ($8 for UCS members)
• CHEM 218 → $8 each ($6 for UCS members)

The packages are not necessarily questions from past exams but rather, extra practice questions relevant to the curriculum. Also, the packages were reviewed by professors and grad students with extensive knowledge in the course topics.

Note: Each exam package has an answer key at the back.

We will not be selling exam packages during final exams.

Are you interested in learning about what you can do with your chemistry degree? The annual Chemistry Forum is happening on Tuesday, March 7! Chemistry Forum 2017 will feature guest speakers from various companies to illustrate the versatility of a chemistry degree. Students will get to learn about different career paths, ask questions, and socialize with the guest speakers over light refreshments and a catered lunch!

We received amazing feedback about our mini-beaker Holiday Candygrams, so we are bringing the beaker candygrams back! This time around, we’re making Valentine’s Day beaker candygrams!

Each candygram comes with a 50 mL beaker stuffed with delicious Valentine’s Day-themed candies. Grab one for your friends and family! You can even grab one for yourself because you’re worth it (treat yourself!).

It’s that time of year again! Storm the Wall 2017 is coming up in March! The Undergraduate Chemistry Society always wants to help you have fun and make the best out of your undergraduate experience, so we are fully reimbursing chemistry teams and individuals! My name is Isla Wrightson and I’m currently in my second year studying chemistry. As you may have gathered, I’m running as the Chemistry Representative in this Fall’s SUS Elections!

I would love to have the opportunity to not only represent the Undergraduate Chemistry Society, but all of the amazing Chemistry Undergraduate students this year in the Science Undergraduate Society.

My goal is to try and have a wide array of faculty wide events for Chemistry Undergraduate students and to try and make this year as awesome as possible for science students in general. As the Chemistry Rep, my job would be to represent the Chemistry Department, so that our voices are heard and to work and communicate rigorously with both UCS and SUS in order to do just that. This year I believe we can have alkynes of fun!

A huge congratulations to this year’s exec team for winning the Canadian Society for Chemistry Student Chapter Merit Award for the second year in a row, as well as the Helen McCrae Award for student engagement. Thank you for your hard work, everyone!

Chemistry Forum is an annual event held at UBC, hosted by the UBC Undergraduate Chemistry Society, featuring short presentations from individuals from various fields of chemistry who will have opportunities to speak to and interact with undergraduate chemistry students about their experiences. The main goal of Chemistry Forum 2015 is to illustrate to students the versatility of a chemistry degree.

Guest speakers include professionals from BC Research Inc., BioteQ Environmental Technologies, Carson Graham Secondary, SWITCH Materials, TRIUMF, and UBC!

A catered lunch will be provided for all attendees.

The dress code is smart formal/casual formal.

The beginning of a new school year means it’s time to equip yourself with some invaluable items: namely, lab manuals, safety glasses, all-cotton lab coats, and safety gloves! Stop by the Grad Lounge at CHEM D211 (note: not D215!) on Sept 3rd – 5th (9am – 2pm) or Sept 8th – 12th (10am – 2pm) and stock up on some lab goods (bring cash!).

UCS will also be selling memberships and renting out lockers, so check that out, too!

Please join us at this year’s Chemistry Undergraduate Research Conference on Thursday, March 27 in the Lillooet Room at the Irving K. Barber Library. This year’s CURC will be featuring the following presenters: Dan Cojocaru, Daniel Kwon, Daniel Beh, Molly Sung, Jennifer Moon, and Alyssa Dalton. Presentations will include a question and answer period, where a panel of judges and audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions to the presenters.

Not sure what you want to do after your BSc in Chemistry? Join us for a day filled with presentations given by professionals working in various fields related to chemistry, including guest speakers from AFCC, Xenon Pharmaceuticals, Inception Sciences Canada, Powertech Labs, and Perkin-Elmer. You’ll hear about the type of work they do and the career path they took to get there. Afterwards, enjoy lunch while networking with our guest speakers.

If you’re thinking about approaching a professor for a research opportunity, but you’re not sure how to do so effectively, UCS has just the workshop for you: hosted by Ms. Kimberley Rawes from the Centre of Student Involvement, the focus of this workshop is to aid undergraduate students in improving their professional communications skills. Dr. Laurel Schafer will also be co-presenting to provide insight on this topic from the perspective of a professor.

Social Coordinator x2 – Host and organize social events such as 2 bucks-a-beaker and Wine and Cheese.

Forum Coordinator x2 – Chemistry Forum is a careers night event for chemistry students. You will be communicating between potential speakers from the industry and UCS.

CURC Coordinator x2 – Organize Chemistry Undergraduate Research Conference (CURC). It is a research conference for 3rd and 4th year students with research experiences. As a CURC Coordinator, you will be communicating with the senior students and graduate students to host the event.

Grad Coordinator x1 – Be part of SUS Science Grad Committee to plan the grad event for the year. You will be communicating between the committee and UCS.

Outreach Coordinator x1 – Organize lab tours and take in charge of science week booth.

Website Coordinator x1 – Maintain UCS website (ucs.chem.ubc.ca) and keep it updated with event photos and descriptions.

Communication Coordinator x1 – Take charge of (Bi)Weekly Nesletter and SNS updates (Michael Acceptor and twitter @UCS_UBC)

On Feb 7, 2013, UCS hosted its Annual Chemistry Forum. This year, it was held at Abdul Lahda Science Student Centre. Students had the opportunity to attend speeches given by chemists in different fields, as well as network with them.

On September 14, 2012, UCS hosted our very own traditional 2 bucks-a-Beaker at Abdul Lahda Science Student Centre. Many undergraduate and graduate students, as well as some of the chemistry faculty members came out and enjoyed the evening with us. The demand was still very high even after we sold out all our beakers. Music was playing and everybody was having a good time. It was a great way to end the week. Look out for updates for our next event!

2 Bucks-a-Beaker is back! Come out to Abdul Lahda Science Student Centre on September 14th and join us for a beaker full of fun. Also called the ‘Symposium of enzymatic oxidation of ethanols,’ this event brings undergrads, grads, and professors together for an informal networking night.
